Many viewers may have put the phrase down to the creative imagination of the employees of the Chuck Lorre company, but Japanese Rain Goggles really do exist. Or at least a prototype of Japanese Rain Goggles has actually been produced.
What are Japanese Rain Goggles?
The genuine Japanese Rain Goggles look just like a pair of regular swimming goggles but with water inside them, between two lenses. You can even buy rain goggles, swimming goggles and advanced Japanese night-vision goggles. The idea of rain goggles specifically is to give the wearer the feeling of being immersed in water at any time. Why anyone should wish to feel that they are walking through water is not explained but Japanese Rain Goggles follow the Japanese tradition of coming up with humorous and faintly absurd inventions.
Wacky Japanese Inventions
Japanese Rain Goggles are one of a long list of wacky inventions to have come out of the Far Eastern country over the last few years. Japan prides itself on inventing ingenious and useless inventions. It is very much a national tradition.
Japanese Rain Goggles are Real
According to the tongue-in-cheek Weird Worm website, other bizarre Japanese inventions include: the 10-in-1 gardening tool that resembles a giant army utility knife; an upside down umbrella that can be used as a personal “rain saver”; butter in a stick, which works in much the same way as a glue stick; and eye drop funnels for directing your eye medication into exactly the right spot.
The wacky Japanese inventions hall of fame also includes training wheels for high-heeled shoes; a finger tooth brush, which fits on to the end of the finger in the same way as thimble; a toilet seat made of real, live grass; electronic brassieres; and cat dusters that attach to the feet of your household pet so that it can dust your shelves as it walks around.
Rain Goggles and Umbrella Inventions
Many Japanese inventions, including the Japanese Rain Goggles referred to in Two and a Half Men, revolve around water and rain. The Japanese seem to have invented a range of umbrellas, with everything from the shoe umbrella to the neck tie umbrella.
Two and a Half Men
Two and a Half Men has been on air since 2003 and is set to continue through to the 2011/2012 season. The show stars Jon Cryer, Angus T. Jones and, of course, Charlie Sheen who played a music and radio jingle writer with a lavish and fun-loving lifestyle. In contrast, brother Alan is highly strung and uptight. When the two move in together, along with Alan's son, hilarity ensues.
Two and a Half Men screens on the CBS network in the United States and on the Comedy Central channel in the U.K. Episode 10 of Season 8 aired on CBS on Monday 22 November.
